Mumble Information

Mumble

Mumble is the VoIP software we use for in-game events and member-to-member communication.  We do not restrict who accesses our Mumble server, though strangers will be questioned about who the heck they are.

If you have any issues or concerns, please contact an officer (in-game or on the forums) and they will assist you or direct you to someone who can help.

You can download the client here:

Connecting for the first time

When you start Mumble, the Mumble Server Connect window should open.  If it does not, click on the Server menu and select “Connect” to bring it up.

Click on the Add New button, and enter the following information:

Label: The Grim
Address: thegrim.org
Port: 64738
Username: (any)

It’s easiest just to use your username from the Grim forums.

Click on the OK button; the new server should appear in the list.  Select the Grim server, and click on the Connect button.  You’re in!

Now that you’re connected, there is some setup you’ll want to do.

Turn Text-to-Speech off

The first thing you want to do is turn off Text-to-Speech, so that every link posted in the text chat isn’t read aloud in a slow, monotone robot voice:

  1. Pull down the Audio menu and choose Text-to-Speech
  2. Click Apply or Ok
Turn VOX off

Next thing you’ll want to do is turn off VOX:

  1. Pull down the Configure menu and choose Settings
  2. Pull down the ‘Transmit’ option where it says ‘Voice Activity’ and choose ‘Push-to-talk’
  3. Drag the slidebar all the way to the right.
  4. Select the ‘Shortcuts’ tab up top to set your Push-to-talk button
  5. Click Apply or Ok
Turn on expert mode

You’ll want to turn on expert mode, as that is where all the cool features are:

  1. Pull down the Configure menu and choose Settings
  2. Select the ‘User Interface’ tab at the top.
  3. Check the box labeled ‘Expert Config’
  4. Click Apply or Ok
Pick a Push-To-Talk key

Push-to-talk does not have a key assigned to it by default. To assign your push-to-talk key:

  1. Pull down the Configure menu and choose Settings
  2. Click the Shortcuts tab at the top of the window that appears
  3. Click in the large horizontal box then press your push-to-talk key
  4. Click Ok at the bottom
Set up your overlay

Configure your overlay options:

  1. Pull down the Configure menu and choose Settings
  2. At the very top right corner of the window, press and hold the right arrow until you see the Overlay tab
  3. Click the Overlay tab.

If for some reason you don’t see the Overlay tab, you are probably not in expert mode. Please re-read the steps above.
