Upon rumors of a Burning Legion invasion we began preparing an expedition to find their stronghold. Reports of demonic activity of the coast of the Eastern Kingdoms were our strongest lead.
Our plan was to set out from Gadgetzan and make our way across the Great Sea. We would scout the coasts of the Eastern Kingdoms for about a week and return before we were discovered and before the Legion could launch their invasion. Nothing went according to plan.
The expedition started out relatively normal. We had supplies and munitions for more than enough time at sea, but a large quantity of space was taken up by engineering supplies. Engineers make me nervous, and the thought of being trapped on a boat with with a large supply of potentially explosive material did not make things any better.
As we prepared to leave the crew found a bird hanging around and gave it a hat. They said that having a bird on an expedition is a good omen because they are the first to sense danger. I'm not sure how I got designated as the bird's keeper, but somehow I ended up being in charge of it.

A Tale of Fel and Sand
Re: A Tale of Fel and Sand
The goblins began pulling out spools of wire and attaching them to every conceivable angle of the ship. I couldn't begin to imagine what they were used for, but with a few light bulbs the whole ship would be appropriately festive for the feast of Winter Veil.
Any time I asked one of the goblins about what this was all about I got the same response, "These are part of the defensive countermeasure. Don't worry, they are 114% safe." I'm not an engineer, but none of that made sense.
I tried to push the wires and contraptions out of my mind and focus on matters at hand. We were quickly approaching a group of islands that we believed was the source of the rumored demonic invasion. My primary concern was that I had not been in direct contact with the Burning Legion. How would this interaction play out with my history as a Forsaken or that as a Death Knight? Both were originally created to serve the Burning Legion, but that bond was broken long ago. Wasn't it?
The Lich King was created to serve the Burning Legion and both the Forsaken and Death Knights were created to serve the Lich King. My bond to the Lich King was clearly broken, and from my readings it seemed that the bond between the Lich King and the Burning Legion was also broken. I have never heard of a Forsaken or Death Knight going back to being under control of the Lich King, but I cannot help but worry. Could a sufficiently powerful demon exert control over the Forsaken?
Before I could get much further into my thoughts, I heard a crew member yell, "LAND SIGHTED!!!" For anyone out of the crow's nest it looked nothing more than a speck on the horizon. Our captain confirmed our location, and decided that this was what we were looking for. Most of us were anxious to get ashore. The crew wanted a bit of a break, and the hired swords were looking for a good fight. Despite our eagerness, the captain decided it would be better if we waited to approach the island under the cover of darkness.

Re: A Tale of Fel and Sand
Even if I had been below decks I could have said that we were approaching the island. As we closed in, the smell of the sea became overpowered by the smell of demons and fel forges. Several of the more delicate members of our expedition lost their stomaches in the midst of the stench.
As we approached the island the stars began to fade. The sky became a dull grey of the darkest variety, and the green light of fel energy served to guide us in without incident.
We found several potential landing zones, but most of the beaches were heavily fortified and swarming with demons. After a few hours of following the coast we found a quiet alcove that would serve as a place to make it to the shore.
With only a couple of hours of darkness remaining, we brought our supplies to shore and set up camp. Setting up camp in pure darkness is one of the worst experiences, but we couldn't risk starting a fire and giving away our position. Our camp hugged the base of a cliff and our survivalists made sure that it would be well hidden once the sun rose.
At dawn, one of the hunters and myself climbed the cliff to get a better view of the surrounding area. We saw countless demonic fortifications, but most of them were clustered near the beaches and along the coasts. If an army could land, then they could turn up the demon's flank with ease.
As we viewed the horizon we saw smoke along the coast. This wasn't the same smoke that the demons produced from the fel fire, this looked more natural. The hunter sent his eagle to spy on the source, and when it returned the answer was clear. Alliance.
