Posse comitatus? Only to handle disaster response they say. But "NorthCom, a joint command established in 2002 to provide command and control for federal homeland defense efforts and coordinate defense support of civil authorities." could theoretically raise eyebrows among the "I don't trust government" crowd.

Probably something to do with the financial sector collapsing and the government fearing a run on the banks or similar.

You know, I would have thought this was already the case that there are military personnel assigned at home, now they are just making that fact more public. The Military can get called in for a lot of situations already.

Hmm..a military unit stationed stateside to help fight terrorists, civil unrest, catastrophies, and Acts of God aka Hurricans and what not.  Golly Gee.  I wonder if this has ever happened in the past.  Oh wait.  We have National Guard units.

Silly me.

Technically the National Guard are state guards and merely recognized at the federal level even though in practice they are tightly integrated into the national force. One imagines that one of the primary drivers for a Heimat (to borrow a provocative name from history) unit is that the various NGs are stretched beyond breaking by unforecast active duty and subsequent recruitment short falls.

There are a bunch of Grim who are active duty armed forces types who aren't chiming in on this thread though who may offer differing view points. Or might not, not wanting to open a can of political worms.

On a related note.

Yes they are but you don't think they wouldn't step up and perform the duties of the same unit Kharzak posted about?  I think not.  All the government did is create a Active Duty version of the NG.  Thats it.

Sure Krin, but for various historical and political reasons having a federal version of the state NGs is interestingtm

Hate to break it to you Muatah but that "all men created equal" part has never been followed with your country.  Unless of course all men=WASP.

Silly civilians with your silly ideas.

First, this article is from the Army Times.  Take that with a grain of salt - the Military Times is a good read when you are taking a dump or on watch for 12 hours... and it's geared towards the military; so is written in military talk.

Second, the Army has been cycling a lot of their units overseas, many many times.  Some of this reason is because there aren't a lot of that type of unit to send (you have only so many Mountain Brigades) and others are because that unit is so good, they get there to get the job done.

What does this do?  It gives a unit the chance to still be on a deployable rotation... but still be here at home to train, equip, and get some RnR.  "Hang out and drink beers" is not a mission standard of the Army... so "Train and Be Ready" is just as good.

My own personal opinion of state governments is absolute crap.  Sure, they got the National Guard - but they always fucking cry to the Federal Government to bail them out.  Unfortunately, my basis of that opinion is not stemmed on fact or reason - merely my own experiences and insight.  So, take *that* with a grain of salt.  Fuck state governments... right in their whining asses.

...

What were we talking about again?  Oh yeah - just stay in your house when you hear the helicopter.  Because "The Man" is coming to take away your freedoms.  Mwhahahahahaha!  Give me your women and your taxes!
