Sweet, thanks for the link Greebo.

Being a hardware guy, I would like to suggest to anyone wanting to build a PC(and wants to save money) to wait until closer to the end of the year when the new CPUs for Intel and AMD come out. What's currently available will drop in price when the latest and greatest comes out.

The latest and greatest is always about to come out, if it isn't a processor its a video card or a new motherboard chipset or a drop in the price of RAM. Build and spec for what you want now, and if there is nothing massive due to drop in the next, say, 3 or 4 weeks just buy it now.

The key thing to absorb when you buy a pc is:

THE PRICE IS ALWAYS GOING TO DROP SOON AFTER YOU BOUGHT IT. ALWAYS.

Buy what you want/need when you want/need it and accept that computers are always going down in price. Making peace with that is crucial.

Different mind-sets, really. I like to buy yesterday's technology at a great price and make it last 4 years. If you're buying the latest and greatest to keep up with technology, then yes, prices will always be dropping because new things are coming out constantly. Yesterday's tech tends to level out, though.

When building a $1000 PC I like to save as much money as possible. If waiting a couple months saves me $300, I'm there. Unless your hardware is going out, there's no need to rush out and get the latest tech when yesterday's is more than enough for the average user. At least, that's my opinion.

Oh, I agree with Deminthus - bleeding edge causes bleeding, from all the sharp edges. But that mid-range quad-core processor you are looking at now will be on special in three weeks, or Seagate's new 8 Terabyte drive is going to push down the price of that 2 TB Western Digital you have your eye on &c &c. The $1k computer you are building now will cost $900 in June and $850 in August ....

Agreed.

I am definitely one of the bleeders. I think my system was 2.5k when I purchased it. Now several years down the road and the technology ceiling has lifted much higher but the floor isn't catching up as fast. In other words: It's been a few years and I still have yet to upgrade anything other than my CPU Cooler. That's the advantage of bleeding edge.

I'll probably upgrade when BF3 comes out later this year but I'll only have to hit a single component: Graphics Card.

My i7 laughs at video games, especially if they utilize more than a single core. My sound is integrated but it's high def and I find it more than adequate. My speakers are speakers. My motherboard won't need an upgrade, there's not much new to put on it. The list goes on.

My personal opinion is to meet in between both trains of thought: Buy the biggest and best of your most important components (motherboard, processor and GPU) and then the rest can be yesterdays technology. By the way I've had my current rig for 5 years now and it still plays the newest games on the highest settings. That's unheard of. If I told myself I would be using the same system in 5 years when I bought it I would have laughed at my silly obviously drug induced future self and pointed to historical trends. Then my current self would share some future stock market changes and my past self would sell his house and invest every dime in explosive stocks and ride the wave of good fortune produced by cheating time paradoxes. Eat that time... you punk ass.

Built my current computer myself, cost about £1300 a good chunk of that was the two graphics cards. Its not bleeding edge but I went for a balance of economy and power, still melts faces though!!
