Perhaps your experience was like WoW.  That is not to say the whole game is like WoW.  Just because in this instance your DM chose to treat a "mark" like a taunt, does not mean that it is in fact a taunt.  The "mark" is an incentive to keep hitting the guy in plate.  There is by no means a rule that forces the enemy to smack the defender.   In WoW, a taunt forces the creature to attack you for a  duration of time.  These things are similar in objective, but very different.  Focusing on this one part of these games is engrossing yourself in the minutiae .  If you take this part out of your argument, I would like to hear what is left.

No aggro table though. The mob just wanted to keep wailing on the big guy in plate cause of a traumatic plate mail experience in its youth.

The mob could have turned around and smacked you any time he wanted - but he'd have done so at a penalty, and depending on whether your defender was a fighter or a paladin, he'd have either risked being hit by a fighter or simply taken a (smaller) amount of automatic damage from the paladin.

"Taunt" says "the monster MUST hit the tank, and has no other choice". An aggro table defines the targets in a fixed priority; the monster has no choice but to follow it.

D&D's marks certainly encourage the monsters to hit the defenders, but they by no means force it; in fact, many defenders are much more interesting and fun to play when an enemy ignores their mark. If your GM was treating the mark as 'You must hit the fighter', he was doing it wrong.
Basic principle: Stay alive! When you die, your DPS is zero.

Come on people. To say that "since marks aren't absolute they are nothing like taunts and aggro" is stupid and simplistic. Might as well say "I don't need a PC to play D&D so it is nothing like WoW"

The flavour of the game has been strongly influenced by the MMO holy trinity.

True, the notion of a "tank" at all is kind of an MMO thing.  The D&D has the advantage of making a little more sense - "I'll hit the guy in plate because otherwise he will DESTROY ME" vs "I will hit the guy in plate because I've got this list here and he's at the top."

But hey, it works.  Everyone has something to do during a fight.  If they've stolen the MMO holy trinity (D&D makes it more of a.. quadity - tanks, healers, DPS, and control, which is reminiscent of City of Heroes more than WoW) they've at least put it to good use.

Anyway, like I said earlier, the resemblance to WoW is largely superficial.  The turn-based combat and the interplay of the various abilities makes it a lot more like various board or card games than an MMO.

True, the notion of a "tank" at all is kind of an MMO thing. 
realy becuse we have been using the idea of meat shild from back in the days of 1st ed. only change is now they have tools to do the job.
also unlike a mmo anything can be done without the roles. you can run a party without a tank or argo at all. you can have a party of all dps and the gm can make it work in 4ed. in manyways this is unlike past dnd game where if you did not have a healer you char would have to be out months to heal.
