Re: TS problems
Pincus and Grainger are in Europe now aren't they? No doubt this is why the server decided to choke.

Re: TS problems
Grainger's been back for a few days, I think. Someone give him a call.
Re: TS problems
Vent sucks mainly cause on both PC and Mac I have had so many more issues making it work compared to TS.Cristok wrote:

Re: TS problems
That said, Vent also uses codecs that offer both higher voice quality and better compression - they eat less bandwidth. I'm a big fan of Vent, tbh.Thalevia wrote: Vent sucks mainly cause on both PC and Mac I have had so many more issues making it work compared to TS.

Re: TS problems
Short answer: No.
Long answer: Cristok tries to bring this up every time there's even a hiccup with TS... tell hims to be quiets.

I really don't undersatnd the Grim's hostility toward Vent. It is so strange I feel like im in the twilight zone sometimes. L2 play.Aquizit wrote: Short answer: No.

Re: TS problems
I really don't understand why people have to bring this up so often. It is the same answer every time. We use TeamSpeak. It's what we've always used. We have a server for it. Everything is already set up for it. It does what we need it to do, except the rare occasion it's down. Everyone has it and knows how to use it. My understanding is that Mac users have issues with Vent, and we have several Mac users.

Re: TS problems
I'll chime in as well, since I am the one (along with Grainger) who's names are associated with the servers we use to host all of this:
The licensing of Ventrilo is, in short, draconian. The Public version only allows 8 connections at a time. You have to get the Pro version to go more than that. Getting a Pro version is not easy, since licenses are not given to people who just want to run server, you have to use a hosting service. That costs $$$. There's also some clauses that also dictate how I must run the server (with respect to firewalls) which I just do not agree to.
TeamSpeak does not have these clauses or limits. They limit 100 connections per non-commercial server. They do not dictate how I can run my server.
TeamSpeak has a better Mac client, which I know many of our players use.
Arguments about bandwidth are null and void. The machine I host thegrim.org on is hosted by Hurricane Electric in San Jose, and when you people are absolutely abusive with my bandwidth, you are lucky to take 10% of my allowance.
In short, since it's my ass that's listed as the administrative contact for the servers and DNS entries, I want to stay above board since I do not want lawyers calling me. Hence, I get to pick the licensing terms that fit the best. TeamSpeak is better in that regard by miles.

Re: TS problems
Looks like the connection to where my servers are got hosed over the weekend.
Perhaps a good time to move the server over to Pincus's machines permanently. We'd been discussing this anyway. That would mean pointing the DNS entries at Pincus' server so it might take a day or two for the DNS to propogate.

I dig Pincus' explanation a bit better, mostly cause I don't undersatnd his mumbo-jumbo. THe argument that we do something cause we've always done it that way, however, is infuriating.
This is what I do know. I can actually hear what people are saying on Vent. On TS I can hear about 50% of the folks clearly and the rest come out as garbbled fuzz. This isn't a problem when only one person is speaking (raid leader) but is a problem when you need 15 people all saying when they have INC to mines! PvP requires many people communicating with each other, not just one person communicating with everyone, whcih is why PvPers will always always always hate TS.
I.know.I.know.I.know. we don't care about that. Nevertheless I will always.always.always state my opinion on this regardless of the horse being beaten XD

Re: TS problems
I also dig Pincus' explanation, and I *do* understand his mumbo-jumbo. It's not been an issue when hosting my own (and arranging to host my guild's) vent servers in the past, but it's his hosting and I'm more than happy to go with what the guy paying for the space and bandwidth decides we ought to do.Cristok wrote:Syreena wrote: We use TeamSpeak. I've never run into problems with the Mac client for Vent; can someone elaborate on the issues they've been having, and I'll see if I can find solutions for them?

Re: TS problems
It's not a giant problem nowadays, as other folks have built Mac-native Vent clients that I've used successfully, but the guys who make Ventrilo are not Mac friendly and have basically stated so on their public blog. It's a question of support for those who aren't on popular systems.
