The Grim Listening Thread
Re: The Grim Listening Thread
Seems we have a lot of people into... err... not even sure what to call it... "alternative" music?
Personally, I'm a huge, huge (did I say huge?) European metal fan. I know most people hear that word and stereotypes fly out of their subconscious, but even some of the loudest groups can put together some rather subdued tracks. Regardless of said stereotypes, Metal (for the most part) is about technical and skill-driven instrumentation accompanied by assorted vocal styles, largely depending on region and influence.
Here's a track from a band that's huge in Europe, but pretty unknown in North America... fairly tame by metal standards, but damn good.
Amorphis - Silent Waters

Nightwish - The Escapist
And because I still love Pink even many years beyond when I first heard her:
Pink - F*ckin' Perfect
Dresden Dolls - Backstabber Not a safe for work video.

Re: The Grim Listening Thread
I met Tarja (the original and much prettier Nightwish singer) backstage at a club in Helsinki. I got a hug. It was special.
I find Nightwish a bit too soft these days, but they definitely had a great few years.

Re: The Grim Listening Thread
Someone said metal?
Well then!
Dethklok - Go Into the Water
Sure it's a cartoon (Metalocalypse that is), but if Brandon Small didn't hit a jackpot with this one.. the songs are funny, but it's metal enough for me.. I love it.

The Doors - Soul Kitchen
Popped up on Pandora for me today. I love the Doors; Jim Morrison has always been my favorite singer and creative artist. Of course, the good always die young, and he was just one of many to fulfill that horrible prophecy.

Re: The Grim Listening Thread
Damnit, metal from a cartoon show doesn't count! It's practically making fun of the genre!
Here's a classic from Iron Maiden, performed in front of 60,000 Indians in Mumbai. You know you're big when no matter what country you go to, you sell out soccer stadiums. These guys put out more stage performance than any band half their age.
Crank the volume and the quality to 720p. It's a cultural experience.

Here's another great one from Maiden, performed live so the actual song doesn't start till a few minutes into it.

Nightmare Before Christmas - Kidnap the Sandy Claws
I've had Danny Elfman pop up twice already on my iTunes Shuffle, so here's my favorite NBC song.
Oh, and the KoRn version: Kidnap the Sandy Claws

So I got a hankering to hear this song today and went to Youtube and HUGH JACKMAN!
Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Oklahoma" (start at :42 to avoid the blahdeeblah)
I had no idea he could sing and sing pretty well at that.
