Hollow: The Conclave ((Open))

Unread post by Leyujin »

The troll warrior's face split in a terrifying mask, his storm grey and cloud white warpaint obscuring his features like passing shadows illuminated by blinding sunlight. The dirty ivory of his tusks projected outward like spearpoints, with the grain of the bone deeply etching subtle textures in its otherwise featureless surface. Leyu'jin Zeysoga was taller and lankier than most trolls, some might say distinctive of the physiology of the Mountain Troll people he came from, yet that thin body was wiry, sinuous and possessive of a sinister grace reminiscent of a snake that imparted an aura of unease to any that stood in his presence for long. The coiled energy in that form was like a tightly wound spring, ready to release itself into deadly action at a moment's notice. As Grim slowly made their way into the guild garrison's central fortress, he constantly shifted position, restlessly, like some wild beast pacing its cage. Once the last Grim had filed into the war room, the monstrous troll lifted his gaze to encompass every cold-blooded killer who sat, slouched, or stood at attention within.

A deep, gravelly voice issued from his throat to address the assembly. It rustled and roared like water tumbling stones along the seashore, and carried a tint of menace that, while soft, made the listener bear no illusion towards the disposition of its owner. This one, was angry, and behind his hushed tones there was carried the promise of murder. "Grim, joo be gathered 'ere tanight ta deal wit' a tool o' evil dat 'as fo' too long escaped our notice. One ba da name o' Morinth, a disgustin', decrepit, vile an' coward-like hooman woman who has gathered powah beyond 'er station, an' who even now holds two o' our own, captured, no doubtin' tortured, imprisoned deep wit'in da heart o' 'er stolen stronghol', da craggy citadel o' Grim Batol."

The corners of his eyes drew back as they narrowed into slits, obscuring but not completely shielding the smoldering fire of the troll's blazing orange irises. A sibilant hiss, like steam escaping from a leaking gas valve, issued from his mouth in a slow, controlled exhale. After this brief expression of emotion, the towering warrior continued. "But dat mattahs not. We Grim hav al'ays sacrified fo' a highah cause, our lives al'ays forfeit in pursuit o' our ultimate goal, PEACE! An' it be on account o' dis cause dat joo be assembled taday, fo' dis invidious slime be a threat, a disturbance ta dat peace, which left unchecked will grow evah boldah, until it be a fiyah dat engulfs us all. It knows not shame no guilt, an' only continues ta build in vile arrogance. Morinth, an' da agents an' army she wields, mus' be struck down, turned inta ash an' dust, scattered, an' buried in da garbage heap o' history ta be forgotten like da pestilence upon dis earth dat dey be."

Raising an unblinking stare to meet the eyes of three of those in attendance, Khorvis, the Lasher and High Inquisitor of the Grim, Drinn Sel'quar the Tactician, and leader of the Bone Collectors, and finally Awatu Stonespire, The Commander of the Grim himself, the Wordbearer sneered and raised his voice. "We go at da 'ead o' an army. Lieutenant General Fhenrir Phoenix 'as petitioned Horde High Command, an' wit' evidence from our scout in da field, 'as secured a battalion o' Kor'kron an' assorted troops ta rid da Horde o' dis menace. We, Da Grim, will be its vanguard, da verra point o' da spear, dat will penetrate deep wit'in da rottin', fetid chest o' our enemy! We go accompanied ba dose who hav bin our foes, an' our rivals, who hav come togethah in agreement dat da foe we face be worthy o' our undivided attention. Borrowed Time, Da Blackguard, an' Sanctuary will compose da res' o' our task force. Earthshakahs! Bone Collectahs! Joo will form da core. Once we inside Grim Batol, it will be up ta us ta neutralize Morinth's Enforcahs, da strongest o' 'er minions, an' da mos' deadly."

The troll's hands convulse into claws, the muscles on his arms straining, cords standing out on his wrists like cables. "Once we hav laid waste ta all witin' da bastion, we will find an' free our comrades, an' mos' important, track down an' end dis bloody witch, dis atrocity, dis blight upon da Horde, Morinth, once an' fo' all! PEACE TROO ANNIHILATION!" The snarling roar burst from his gullet in an explosive pulse, the primal scream of the tiger. "DEY WILL ALL BE DESTROYED! DEY WILL BE AS SMEARED SHIT UPON DA FLOOR! DEY WILL BE RENT ASUNDAH AN' DER LOS' SOULS WILL FOREVAH WANDAH DIS EARTH IN TORMENT!" Clamping down on his rage, Leyu'jin whirled off to the side, his gaze settling on the Sin'dorei huntress, Shaelie Brightwing. Through clenched teeth, he extended one arm and beckoned forth in a languid gesture. "Shaelie, come forth an' giv yo' report."

((This is the forum RP for Hollow, covering the final operation to invade Grim Batol, rescue Cobrak and Lilliana, and kill Morinth. Once Shaelie's given her overview of the situation, the floor is open to all to participate.))

Shaelie stepped forward when Leyu'jin beckoned her. The mechanical scorpid that was forever at her side scuttled behind her, it's metal legs making a soft clicking sound against the floor. She turned, facing the gathered Grim and began her report.

"A couple of nights ago, I attached a surveillance device to one of my mechanical beasts and sent it on a flyover of Grim Batol, so we could get a sense of their defenses and what forces Morinth has ready. I was looking primarily for how their base was set up, and the best possible entry point for an invasion. I also wanted to search for signs of sentries or scouts up in the mountains.

What I found was formidable. From what I could see from the air, she has at least close to a thousand foot soldiers, carrying banners of both the Alliance and those of the Twilight Cultists. Many of the soldiers patrol the roads leading to Grim Batol, as well as the surrounding area. The hills and mountains that border this fortress are fortified by a multitude of bunkers and guard towers. As far as large scale weaponry, I saw quite a few siege tanks. And the biggest Fel Reaver I've ever seen in my life. And it's been modified beyond any fel reaver I've seen before. This one has two giant tanks on it's back of some sort of green substance.. blight, maybe? There are large hoses hooked up to the cannisters and what appears to be cannons mounted on it's shoulders." She glanced to Leyu'jin. "That's something our own forces will have to be very careful about. I'm betting that as soon as the fighting starts, that thing will begin spraying that stuff everywhere. Unless we can take out the tanks or somehow disable the fel reaver during the initial attack."

The huntress stepped aside then, her report complete, and opened the floor back to the guild for questions. As she did so, she blinked, suddenly recalling something.

"Wait, I just remembered something.. When Nahael and I were fighting that dwarf in the cave in Twilight Highlands, the dwarf injected himself with something that seemed to increase his size and power... although it made him really sick afterwards. Maybe the stuff the tanks isn't for us. Maybe it's for them.."

The High Inquisitor could not restrain a piercing howl as Leyu’jin’s tirade roused the assembled ranks. With his feedbag raised to the vaulted ceiling, the soul mist of his implant visually mimicked the shout - a dozen vaguely orc-like faces twisted against an invisible barrier with their own silent warcries. As quickly as they had appeared, the pale faces sunk back into the mist and Khorvis lowered his chin, spent. He focused his gaze on the Wordbearer, having returned to his senses, and then to the report of his Supplicant, Shaelie Brightwing.

That the Grim would ride at the tip of the spear was no news to the orc - he had joined in the strategy meet with Fhenrir. These Enforcers of Morinth, whoever they were, also gave the warrior little pause. Whelps, likely jumped up on whatever drugs the cult could secure on the black market auction house or clumsily manufacture on their own, and thugs toting weapons over which they could claim no mastery. It would be a one-sided slaughter with the Earthshakers washing their blades in pinkskinned corpses.

What did cause a great furrow to crease the Inquisitor’s brow was the news of this fel-reaver. Massive constructs that had formed the backbone of the Legion’s ground forces; they were formidable enough during the campaigns in Outlands. If the huntress’s report was to be believed, then this hulk would exact a heavy price from any frontal assault. What was even more dangerous was the unknown – the unexplained weaponry attached to the reaver.

Khorvis chose this moment to speak his mind. “Wordbearer, lok’regar! We will crush these Enforcers without mercy, of that I do not doubt. And yet I do think marching to the very gates of Grim Batol and beneath the feet of that fel-reaver do be a waste of some lives.” Pausing, the orc looked over the gathering and weighed the worth of some of his comrades. He would be slow to admit it, but the scale was heavy. “Four fists do be a small war party in this battle. Small enough to be dropped behind the enemy lines, aye? Do the Krazzworks still be operational? May be what we do need is an airship.”

The report felt like a daunting task under the unfathomable scene. A Fel-Reaver, here? Ul-Rezaj crossed his arms from among the crowd and contemplated the odds of victory under a variety of possible scenarios for a moment. All of them ended in death. In order to subdue such a mechanically charged beastie the Grim would need someone, or something, bigger and better than parlor tricks and floppy blades. Khorvis' suggestion of an airship seemed sufficient, but with the blight mechanics there would need to be a more sustained assault to keep from putting all chances of success on one ace, especially given the durability of an enormous and quite literal war machine. A thought crossed his mind.

"Ey," Ul-Rezaj called out above the assembly, "Why jus' take an' airship when we could be takin' a whole dragonflight?" He paused for a moment to let the idea sink in. Some faces expressed disgust at the recommendation immediately. Others, less sane though they may have been, appeared intrigued.

An unidentified, dismissive voice implored, "No jokes, please. Do you realize what is at stake here? We do not have time to be squandering any windows we have available."

Another remark, probably an Undead given the signature croaking intonation and mellow, less emotional, inflection asked, "Enough, there are no windows. You all heard the reports. This is insane. We are all going to die. What, Troll, do you therefore have in mind if indeed you are serious?"

Ul-Rezaj smirked, rising to a fuller height and taking a step forward to centralize his position, "If'n you be willin', den ahm gonna hafta recommend we contribute to our chances o' manipulatin' de Reds. Per'haps we kin be usin' dem since dey jus' so happen to nestle right nex' to Grim Batol an' all. Here are de possible scenarios ah've weighed:

Firs', we ask de Reds politely. Chance o' persuadin' dem be minimal.

Second, we risk any air support by drawin' de mechanical beastie to de Reds. Dis'n be unlikely if Morinth got a leash on de pet or de dragons decide to turn us into a seething heap.

Third, we slip away some eggs via Shadowblades, den we tell de Reds, "Grim Batol be undeh infestation at de hands o' an evil cult tryin' to raise up a dragon army. You hafta help us if'n you wanta see your young again." Dis'n be more likely to catch attention."

A Goblin squawked, "Crazy, but it just might work."

The Troll appeared quite pleased with himself until someone asked, "What's your plan for dealing with the numerous guards in place?"

Ul-Rezaj rolled his eyes and stepped back into the ranks of the Grim's participants. "Do you know de land? Lots o' unstable, warped elementals still in craze. Per'aps de Gazreeth could try an' summon up a larger tentacle. Also, if'n you consideh de circumstances, den de Ogres may be conscripted to some avail if you be stockin' up a large enough carrot to chase dem into de frontlines. Eitheh we go in with a flash and a bang, o' we go in sneakin'." He stopped for a moment, then asserted, "False dilemma, actually. Ahm gonna hafta recommend we get in der, do de deed o' killin' our foe an' savin' our kinsmen, den slippin' out to allow de fightehs to scatteh should we be gainin' some sort o' leverage. Ain't worth cleanin' up de deserted ranks which goin' to inevitably lose der coherence afteh de commandeh be dead. Per'aps it may be to some avail should some o' de Twilight's Hammer rethink their lives for whateveh gave rise to committin' to such a cause in de firs' place." Ul-Rezaj slunk back into the crowds, but not out of earshot to continue listening and moving as needed.

Leyu'jin crossed his arms as well, and passed his gaze back and forth between Ul-Rezaj and Khorvis. His eyes narrowed as he weighed and assessed the different arguments. As Ul-Rezaj finished his council and withdrew from the floor, the white-haired troll warrior intoned gravely, "We canna assume dat we kin gathah furthah assistance ta deal wit' da obstacles laid befo' us. Howevah, dat donna prevent us from tryin' ta do so."

He reached up and drummed his gauntleted fingers on one of his tusks in contemplation. As he did so, a slow light seemed to kindle in his eyes. "Der be a way we migh' be able ta procure an airship, one dat be likely ta work. Xaraphyne be da captain o' da Skyseekah. Ah'm sho' 'er crew would be willin' ta lend such a vessel ta our cause." Leyu'jin nodded vigorously and pounded his fist into the palm of his hand. "Aye, dat would allow our task force direct access ta da fortress. It wonna provide a countah ta da Fel Reavah, but it will allow us ta bypass it un'armed, leastways."

The warrior began to pace, his head bowed in thought. "Ul-Rezaj's idea do hav sum merit. Da Red's likely not ta forgive da Twilight Cult fo' der occupation o' Grim Batol, an' could be a potent force if harnessed." He slowed to a halt, than raised his eyes to take in the congregation of the Grim once again. "Do der be any'un 'ere wit' connections ta da Red Dragonflight who could act as our ambassadoh?"

Filora spoke up not to answer the last point, but the first. She'd been standing in the back, quiet as usual – actually, more so than usual, as she wasn't even unobtrusively antagonizing anyone.

"Selash Gustblade," she said. When attention moved to her, she shifted and folded her arms. "He worked on Xara's airship, and he has a bone to pick with Morinth. He can pilot it." She waved a hand. "But one other thing strikes me as kind of important... Shaelie said that reaver has tanks of green liquid on its back?"

She paused to let the others back up a few mental steps.

"I'm not always up to speed on recent events, but I seem to recall that something was stolen from us that fits that description."

Images of dragons fluttering to and fro around Grim Batol consumed Ul-Rezaj's mind for a hazy moment.

Snapping back into attention, he raised a suspicious brow at Filora and asked, "Whatchu mean 'missin', exactly?" He jeered from behind a row of people and shouldered his way through some of the gathered attendants. "Coulda been helpful to have a fail-safe in place should some'tin like dis happen. Hope you like dragons or, more practically, have anotheh plan in mind to keep us in de runnin'. Way things be lookin': Fel Reaveh, blight tanks, and a massive numbe' o' enemy soldiehs don't exactly sound like a run o' de mill operation."

Ul-Rezaj's expression turned flat with obstinate skepticism. His brow furrowed as he mentally checked out of reality for a hesitant moment of silence without paying any attention to his surroundings or Filora's reaction.

Ahm wonderin' what de motives behind all dis robust craze be for anyhow.

The troll warrior nodded as Filora spoke. "Aye, Selash an' ah fought in many a battle back in da day. Ah'm sho' e' would be willin' ta lend 'is support fo' dis endeavoh. Even despite 'is misgivings towahds us...", he raised a brow, "da importance o' our mission, an' da presence o' Borrowed Time an' Sanctuary, should assuage any doubts. Ah will speak ta 'im personal-like, requestin' 'is support."

Having answered the Sin'dorei Blood Knight's first comment, Leyu'jin now addressed her second.

"Joo be quite righ' ta put two an' two togethah, Filora. Ah hav bin informed ba Rhuune, a membah o' da Deadshots, dat da Hollowrot "poison" be in fact a powahful combat stimulant."

"Its side effects be why it wuz called a poison in da firs' place. But in point o' fact, its intent wuz ta create supahsoldjahs whose fightin' prowess be vastly increased. Its volatility wuz its only downside. Howevah, ah hav bin tol' dat when it be mixed wit' da blood o' a Deadeye Chieftain, its powers be magnified even furthah. Wors' still, da deleterious effects o' da venom be mitigated. An' o' course, Cobrak haz da Chieftain's blood."

He took a deep breath, snorting it out through his nostrils in a long stream. "Ah canna be sho' whethah da substance in da Fel Reavah be da treated o' untreated Hollowrot poison. But in eithah event, it will make it even mo' difficul' fo' our soldjahs ta reach da fortress wit'out significant casualties. Even wit' our strike force airborne an' delivered ta Grim Batol direct-like, we will need fo' our main body o' troops ta hav a fightin' chance if we are ta successfully raid da bastion."

The white-maned troll tossed his head imperiously. "Ah suggest our alchemists an' magicians begin research ta see whethah der be a way ta nullify da stimulant, o' at least return it ta its poisonous state. Ambassadohs, reach out ta our allies in dis mission, an' see whethah any o' dem hav found a way ta do so alredy."

The warrior finally turned his gaze to the most recent speaker, Ul-Rezaj. "As fo' joo, Soul Eatah. Ah suggest if joo like dragons so much, dat joo find a way ta bring dem ta our cause. Ah would prefer yo' method leaves dem as allies, o' at least neutrally inclined, towahds us at da end o' dis battle. Ah donna wan' ta leave Grim Batol an' find a flight o' Reds breathin' down our necks. Undahstood?"

The Shadowblade listened quietly as she sat off to the side. She didn't bother trying to follow along with the plans being discussed as she sharpened her blades. Whatever plan Leyu'jin came up with, she would follow it, swinging her blades in the direction he sent her until they bit flesh and bone and blood.

Syreena had no hopes that Lilly or the other captives were still alive. It had been too long. They were certainly dead by now, probably tortured to death.

But Morinth and all her cronies would still pay for what they'd done.

After rubbing various poisons onto her blades, while other Grims still talked, the little rogue stood and looked at Leyu'jin and then Khorvis.

"Let's go kill some Morinths already."

The white-haired troll grinned and nodded. "Aye. Enuff talkin'." He waves imperiously. "Joo all know wut we face, now it be da time ta knock down Morinth's door an' git back our own. Grim, move out!"
