Hektar's Fate
Hektar, September 24, 2006
Hektar had been confined to a primitive cell for quite some time.
How much time he did not know. Days maybe, a couple weeks more
than likely. He would have dwelled in darkness were it not for
the spirit of fire granting him an ever burning torch. He was
told a message was to be delivered to The Grim to have them come
for him. But since then he had not seen a soul, had it not been
for the rodents and a small stream of water running down the rock
face he would have surely perished by now.
It was time once again, he decided, to attempt an escape. The
only way in or out of his cell was one door, and it had been
barred with a boulder, how large he could not tell from within
the cell but he decided he must try.
Hektar called on the strength of the earth and began pushing on
the boulder. It did not even budge. Suddenly the boulder began to
roll and soon his way was clear... or so he thought. Before him
stood a female troll he knew as Tashin. But he knew also she was
not a troll at all.
"Your fate has been decided orc."
"And?" Hektar stared coldly at Tashin.
"Well my queen was first ready to grant your freedom if your
people wished it... but she has changed her mind."
"So I am to die?" Hektars voice was cold, lacking fear.
"Yes orc, you will die.. in time."
"You call me orc now, not Dragonsbane? Why is this?"
"We were mistaken, you are not the chosen one, your failure has
made this clear. The blood of Dragonsbane runs through your
veins... but you are not he."
Tashin walked toward Hektar and placed her hand upon his chest. A
red glow pressing out from where her skin touched his. Hektar
could do nothing, he simply stood stunned, a pain shooting
through his body he closed his eyes tightly, fighting for his
life as an orc would. Then as fast as the light came it was gone.
Hektar opened his eyes.
"I am not dead." Hektar could not hide the suprise in his
statement.
"No I simply removed the protective spells my queen laid upon you
when first we met. You are not worthy of the mark of the Red
Dragonflight." Tashin turned and walked away into the darkness.
Hektar walked forward from his cell into a giant cavern, he
turned to see the boulder that had held him in. It was easily
30feet around, he never would have moved that.
Then he heard, almost as a whisper on the wind "Embrace it and
your death will be quick."
Hektar dove to his right just in time to avoid the buffet of
flame that emerged from the darkness. The cavern was lit now by
the flames and Hektar saw before him a giant Red dragon. 'Was
this Tashin' he wondered for only a brief moment before the red
struck again. Its movements were fast and powerful, but they
lacked cunning and finesse and Hektar was able to dodge blow
after blow. This was not Tashin, this was a young male.
Apparently they no longer held any fear of Hektar.
The dragon swung wildly, Hektar barely able to avoid the blows as
he became tired. He called upon the elements and sent bolt after
bolt of lightning into the large beast. It cried out in pain, but
its pain only seemed to drive him on. Hektar dove to the ground
as a stream of flame came toward him. As he hit the ground it
seemed to give way, he peered closely to discover he laid upon a
shield on top of a body. His curiosity was quickly put aside
though as he felt the flames coming upon him. Hektar took up the
shield, damp from the moisture within the cavern and put it
between him and the fire.
Steam filled the air as Hektar pushed against the onslaught of
flame, he called upon the elements to coll the shield so that it
might take the assault. the dragon was getting frustrated
throwing wave after wave of flame at Hektar, occasionally moving
in to take a swing, only to be met with lightning bolts to his
talons. Hektar pushed the dragon toward one of the cavern walls
in this way, he could feel his body becoming weak, the battle
taking a significant toll upon his body. Suddenly he spotted what
he needed, a large battle axe lay some ten feet away from Hektar.
Its size was amazing, no doubt from an Ogre that had server the
Orcs of Grim Batol during the war. He would have to drop his
shield to wield such a weapon. His timing would have to be
perfect.
As the red rose up to take in air for another breath of flame
Hektar made his move. He dropped the shield, ran forward,
snatched up the axe, then leapt toward the dragons chest with all
his might. Hektar brought the axe crashing down, straight into
the heart of the dragon. It bellowed in pain and began to fall.
Hektar knew he must jump clear, but could not muster the
strength, the battle had drained him of all he had.
Hektars body impacted on the cavern floor only seconds before the
body of the Red dragon came crashing on top of him.
