Grim Beginnings by Grimfury

Unread post by Keeper Of Lore »

((I don't know how many of you have ever gotten to hear the tale of Grim's origins. I know it's not perfect and i'm sure there are plenty of holes in it, but i thought i'd post it for you as it was some of the first roleplaying i ever did. Even though some of the details could be changed i will leave it as is because i was inspired to write it by a couple of my old guildmates who really got me sucked into the world of RP. Thanks to Malebrignon and Kante for opening up a totally new aspect of the game for me.*Smiles* Without further ado this is the origins of Grimfury Darkstrider.))

Gather 'round my friends, I am going to tell you a tale.....a tale of beginnings and endings. This is the tale of Grimfury Darkstrider, or Grimfury Bloodhoof as he is known now.

You see, life for our hero was not always full of laughter, adventures with comrades, and storytelling over a mug of ale. There was a much darker time in his life, when the next breath was never a guarantee. Grimfury was born the only child of a loving mother, Nera Plainswind. Her name is not important, all that matters is that she loved him more than anything else in existence. His birth was a miracle, in more ways than one, because Nera was not supposed to be able to have a child. Now it is a thing of pride for a tauren cow to raise her child, and Nera had long ago given up any hopes of raising one of her own. This caused her to lead a life of seclusion, devoid of any companionship, living in a small hut near the mountains in Mulgore.

One night, as Nera was preparing to lay down for bed, she heard a sharp rap at the door. Upon opening, she lay her eyes on a very strange sight indeed, a male human all dressed in black stood in her doorway. He spoke to her in her native taurahe tongue and was very polite and quiet. If that wasn't strange enough, the most startling aspect was the fact that his eyes shone with a light of purest gold........almost as if he was filled with a shining power within! Nera never feared the man, as something about him left her feeling calm, yet totally insignificant. She could sense there was much power in this mage, for that is what he surely was.

He asked her for an invitation inside, then closed the door quietly behind him without waiting for an answer. He promptly lit a fire in the hearth with a nod of his finger and then took a seat on the floor. He told her that his name was Darkstrider and that he had some important news to tell her. They talked for awhile, of nothing of any importance to anyone here, and then finally he became very quiet. Darkstrider turned his head and Nera felt he was looking into her very soul when those eyes of gold shone upon her. He spoke quietly and had very little to say, but what he did say would soon change her life for evermore. She was to have a son, and upon his shoulders the fate of the world would ride. This was no ordinary son, not born of conception, but of magic and fate. His name would be Grimfury, and anyone who would dare to impede his fate would surely feel his wrath and understand the true meaning of it. Not many more details were given to Nera, only that she was to raise him strong and guide him down a path of honesty and nobility. Darkstrider assured her that someday he would be back to check in on Grimfury's progress and to guide him to his destiny.............that day draws near, and soon Grimfury will have to make a choice, and embrace his power!

Let me get another drink and i will continue my tale and tell you of how Grimfury became known as Grimfury Bloodhoof.

Draeg'thanos sat on his perch above the world......slowly he turned his head and watched from afar at the progress the young Grimfury was making. He knew that this young tauren had a lot resting on his shoulders.
It was then, that the mighty bronze dragon noticed that something was amiss! He knew there was no way he could get there in time to save Grimfury's mother but he also knew that nothing could be allowed to harm this child before it was his time. Draeg'thanos flew like the wind, aided by magic and with a fierce determination that any creature in the realms would fear, he reached the small homestead in mulgore just as the foul centaur cut down Nera. She fought bravely, wanting to save her son, but this raiding party was too much for one.
Draeg'thanos swiftly turned his head and bit one of the creatures in half, leaving it's torso writhing on the ground in a pool of blood. He promptly spun around and left 3 more of the party laying on the ground in ashes with nothing more than a blink of his mighty gaze. The final two lackies fled but they never had a chance as he cut them down before they had made it twenty paces. Now it was time for the one who called himself their leader.
It was much as Draeg'thanos suspected, the leader was a magician........one of the strongest of the centaur tribes. Certainly no match for a timeless aspect such as himself, but more than a match for a young tauren brave. You see, the day that Grimfury was born, all of the most powerful magic users around the world felt his presence. The good ones knew that surely something wonderful had happened, whilst the ones filled with evil in their souls, were filled with terror, because they knew that one day he would bring about their downfall.
He quickly vanquished the centaur spellcaster, and then took a moment to switch into the form of a troll, so as not to startle Grimfury if he should awaken. Darkstrider knew that he must find a home for the young tauren where he would be protected, and be able to grow strong with training. After some thought he finally decided that he would approach the Tauren Chieftain, Cairne Bloodhoof. He had known Cairne for some time as Darkstrider and had gained Cairne's trust. So the troll mage carried young Grimfury to Thunderbluff on his mother's kodo, finally reaching the chieftains hut. After a short talk with Cairne, and explaining the magnitude of the responsibility this young brave brought with him, the chieftain finally agreed that he would raise the young Grimfury as his own. That day Grimfury became Bloodhoof, and a great alliance was forged.
Darkstrider smiled and switched back into his true form outside of town. He flew back to his perch to watch over the realm and knew that soon enough he would be back at Grimfury's side. It was his duty you see, and Grimfury was going to play a big part in his plans, for Draeg'thanos in the old tongue means Bane of Darkness, and that is what he surely was. And Grimfury was his blade!!!

The old troll chuckles and begins telling more of the story.........
It was at about his fifth season when Grimfury met his friend Shuhalo. Shuhalo was a tauren druid and perpetual troublemaker. He was a good seed though, he just had a knack for getting into mischief. Shuhalo and Grimfury went on many adventures together, coming close to losing their lives several times, but growing stronger and wiser along the way. One time, around their fifteenth season, they managed to draw the ire of an entire band of raptors, and were only saved when the mighty Eredar happened to be close by, and with the help of his succubus, managed to help them escape.
One particular time, they ventured into the wailing caverns together, in search of a treasure that Shuhalo had supposedly found a map to. They banded up with a few more adventurers that happened to be closeby and delved into the dark depths. They fought heartily and vanquished many powerful foes. There were many powerful druids inside, who had been corrupted by darkness. They systematically killed them all off one by one and managed to get some pretty nice armor from it. They finally came to the end of the dark tunnels and the final druid stood on top with his minions, a large treelike creature stood closeby.
As the battle joined, Grimfury and Shuhalo were seperated, another group of enemies joined the battle, and it was around this time that Grimfury heard Shuhalo cry out in pain. He cut through his enemies as if they were only air and moved through the middle of them like the Grim Reaper incarnate to reach his only friend. You see Grimfury still felt the loss of his mother and couldn't bear to have another loss of that magnitude on his conscience. As he cut down the final enemy, Shuhalo came into sight, he was half sitting on the ground and the evil druid had him around the neck and was poised to deliver the killing blow. Grimfury called forth the power of lightning and it seared into the druid's back, burning his flesh. The druid swiftly let go of Shuhalo and chuckled, as Shuhalo fell into a sleep. A foul spell of the druid, that Grimfury knew not how to vanquish. Grim yelled in anger, and the caverns shook with his mighty roar, with a swipe of his cleaver he lobbed off the head of the once great druid and watched it bounce on the floor. Blood sprayed all over Grim's face and made him look like a monster indeed. There seemed to be nothing wrong with Shuhalo, besides a minor wound he appeared to be only sleeping. In anger, Grimfury rained more lightning down upon the treelike being and it jumped in pain. The whole party attacked the creature and brought it down swiftly. Grim then went and picked up his best friend, and carried him out of the caverns. A tear fell from his eye as he had failed the only friend he ever had. He made an oath that day that he would forever fight all darkness in the world, they would fear him and shake at the mention of his name. That was the day that set Grimfury down the path of greatness. Fueled by anger and pain he would tear down one group after anoher, in his quest to rid the world of this darkness that had crippled his friend.
Shuhalo was revived back at Thunder Bluff by one of the tauren druids. He was healthy but forever changed. He had no desire to fight, he spent his days tailoring and making things out of cloth. Grimfury visited him from time to time, but it always just brought him more pain to see the state his friend was in. Eventually Shuhalo would come out of it, but that is a tale for another day. It was about this time, that Grimfury began questing with Eredar, and an orc shaman named Hellslain. He would grow stronger with each passing day and have many more adventures along the way, which i will tell you more of soon....................
The old troll nodded and turned his head to listen to the question, he slowly reflected back and prepared to give an answer.......

After the tragedy at the Wailing Caverns, Grimfury knew that he must distance himself from the Bluffs and his family and allow himself some time to get his head straight. After spending some time in the not so distant land of Ashenvale, Grimfury finally decided that it was time that he explore what the other continent had to offer. Having heard many tales of horror and despair from Eredar during their travels together, Grimfury had been reluctant to journey to old lands surrounding the Undercity as it was now known. Tales of creatures that made your hair stand up, tales of nightmare worgs and aspects worse than Death himself. After a long trip on an old zeppelin, the adventurers finally arrived on an old rickety platform outside of the Ruins of the old kingdom that now were home to the Undercity.

As time had passed, Grimfury had began turning into a more hardened and deadly version of his younger self. Still possessing his spirit for adventure and curiosity enough to overcome his wisdom at times, but also possessing enough skill to be considered deadly to anyone not wary enough to steer clear of him in a battle. Eredar had heard of an old fortress nearby, that was said to house all sorts of nightmarish atrocities, but also supposedly was home to some very beneficial weapons and armor that both friends would get much use out of. Grimfury was overcome with lust for an adventure again and the dragon in him grew restless for the blood of the dark ones.

Stopping only briefly in the Undercity, which disturbed Grimfury immensely, the odd pair gathered some supplies for their journey to the legendary Shadowfang Keep. As they were preparing to board the elevator to the surface, they ran into one of Grimfury's good friends Hellslain. The shaman coincidently was also preparing to go on a journey into the keep to see if he could retrieve a fabled pendant that he had heard about during his travels throughout the land. Glad to have company, the three hardened warriors headed out into the dead forests surrounding the city, and began their journey, speaking of the treasures and riches they hoped to discover.

It was late in the day and the shadows were growing long as the band of adventurers rounded the curve to Shadowfang Keep. An eerie cry pierced the air and made shivers run down Grimfury's spine. As they neared the entrance to the keep, the party came upon two trolls sitting on a large rock next to the road. It turned out they were brothers who were preparing to enter the keep themselves. "It would be better if we all traveled in together, I've heard rumors of some really foul creatures inside and we can use all the help we can get!" Grimfury remarked. The band pushed open the doors and began their descent into hell.

Once inside, the two shaman were hard pressed to keep their friends alive. Masses of worgs, ghouls and ghosts of all shapes assailed the crew from all sides. They fought valiantly and pushed their way onward through the keep, determined to retrieve the treasures they had heard about. Grimfury almost got the whole group killed when he mistakenly attacked a Felsteed. After they had vanquished the steed they came upon an old dining hall. It turned out to be haunted by many creatures. After a particularly nasty fight they found the first treasure of their excursion, a nice one handed cleaver. Grim strapped on his shield and wielded his new found weapon and they headed ever further into the darkness.

The band hit their stride and began to cut through the masses efficiently, the trolls were joking back and forth, Grimfury and Hellslain were having a competition to see who could down the most ghosts. Everything was going great as Eredar threw shadow spell after spell at the beasts surrounding them. Climbing through a tower they came upon a massive beast. It was a large Worg, evidently mutated to many times the size of an average wolf. The crew stopped silent and fear filled their hearts. They had never seen a beast of this magnitude before. The trolls began to doubt whether any treasure was worth facing such a foul beast. Finally their mind was made up for them as one of the Worg's minions spotted them and let out a howl.

It was a full on battle as several smaller worg's assailed the group. Grimfury cut through them like a scythe through the wheat, sweeping his deadly cleaver to and fro and filling the air with a mighty roar. He cut down another unlucky pup and crashed into the large Worg with a snarl. The worg slammed against his shield and it's large fangs sliced through Grimfury's armor. Bleeding badly he managed to bash the Worg in the eye and throw it off balance. Hellslain through down a heal and Grim's wounds closed up before his eyes. Eredar's succubus cracked her whip and tried a charm on the worg to no avail. The two troll rogues stabbed the beast time and again but it was strong and it seemed as if all was going in vain. Grimfury called down the lightning and asked for the strength of the earthmother as he cut the wolf yet again. Reaching deep down he called upon the powers of frost and shocked the wolf, stunning it and allowing the brothers to move in for the kill. Finally the battle was won as Grim lopped off the head of the foul critter. It was then that they heard an eerie sound emanating from further within the tower.

They picked up what they could from the wolf's lair and ventured further down the halls. The group was bloody and beaten as they entered the lair of the mage. Noone had realized an enemy of this magnitude resided there as none had lived to tell the tale who had seen him. The healed and readied for battle and Grimfury charged at the sorcerer. Slicing and spellcasting the enemy Grimfury took down his health with amazing speed. It was then that the horrific event happened. The mage threw a spell the hit Grimfury head-on. It possessed him with the will of the caster and he turned around and headed back into his party head on. The two unfortunate trolls were dead before they even knew what hit them, as Grimfury was much stronger than they. Eredar ran in fear knowing that he was no match for the young tauren. Hellslain attacked the mage hoping to break the link until he was struck in the back of the head and rendered unconscious at the feet of Grimfury and his mighty shield. All seemed lost as Eredar ran from the room hoping to break free..................Grimfury called upon the powers of lightning and prepared to deal the killing blow to his friend.......yes, death had come calling that day, and there seemed to be no way to avoid it..........

Draeg'thanos shuddered. Something was greatly amiss to have woken him from his deep slumber. He could sense danger and pain rolling wave upon wave as he reached out for Grimfury's consciousness. He tried to soothe the dragontaurahe and pull his mind back from the depths of hell. Frantically he searched for an inkling of Grimfury through the alien mind he had found. Power surged through the Twisting Nether as he sought a bond with his son's mind. Hopefully it was not too late or all would be lost...............

Grimfury wept. His mind was a cage and through the bars he could see his fellow adventurers falling one by one to his fearsome axe. Screaming and twitching violently with every blow, Grim tried to break free of this hell. His screams went unheard and he began to cry out to the Earthmother and all that was holy.

"G-r-i-m-f-u-r-y"........almost like the wind whispering through the leaves he heard his name, or was it just a lie made up by his tortured mind. "G-r-i-m-f-u-r-y".........again but stronger now, he began to focus on the sound. "SON STOP!!! YOU ARE KILLING THE ONES DEAR TO YOU!!!"

Like a beacon of flame in the darkness, Grimfury felt the voice roar through his mind. Painfully he began to wrench free of the possession as he felt the strength of a hundred thousand tauren flow through him. His father had joined with his mind at the last possible second and Grim was able to redirect the flood of electricity into the mage and away from Eredar. The wizard writhed in pain as raw power coursed through his entire body for seconds that seemed like millenia, as the bronze and the dracontaurahe seared his entire being into ash. As Eredar turned and watched, Grimfury shimmered in and out of form, one second he was an angry bull, the next, a rampaging dragon, and finally it was done.

"Careful, my son. You must leave this foul place and come to me to complete your training. I fear that if not, I will not be able to save you next time." Draeg'thanos withdrew his mind from his sons and journeyed back to his body, thankful he had been able to get through in time. It was time to teach his son the ways of the dragon.

Bewildered, Grimfury surveyed the damage that he had inflicted. Grasping Eredar in a massive hug that would have crushed a living man, Grim apologized for losing control. Eredar sat stunned in awe at the power he had witnessed flowing through the young tauren. He had been unaware to this point of Grimfury's heritage. Much explaining would have to follow, but for now Grim set to work bringing the souls back to his fallen comrades and healing their wounds..............His journey was just beginning....

Grimfury had been on this journey for nigh on a week. Several times he had encountered small groups of naga along the coastline that he had to fight off. The area was alive and filled with vivacious creatures of all sorts. Strangely though, the last hour the sounds had died off and the area seemed as if it was void of all life. Finally as he moved up over a ridge, he came into a clearing in the trees. Moss hung from all the branches and the place had an eerie vibe, shut off from most light.

Looking around, Grim saw the remnants of an old fire, a small hut sat off to one side and in the darkness of a large cliff was cut a massive cave. Grimfury had always inherently been able to see well at night which was rare for his kind. Searching the shadows he beheld two large golden orbs staring back at him. Startled, the young tauren jumped back before regaining his composure. "Welcome, son," the drake stated calmly. It came out as a whisper and finished a low growl. "I have summoned you here for your training, as it is past due, and imperative for your future!"

"Who are you? I feel like i already know you, you must be the voice that saved me in Shadowfang! Why do you keep insisting on calling me son??" Grimfury asked many questions and Draeg'thanos merely sat back and listened. Finally he spoke. "All of your questions will soon be answered my son, for now though you merely need to know that you are a Darkstrider, true son of Draeg'thanos, and scion of the bronze dragonflight. Soon you will be asked to fulfill your duties as champion, for now though it is time to finish your training, and embrace your destiny!!" Grimfury smiled......
