He sees knowledge as the ultimate power, and will go to any means to expand it.

Positive Personality Traits: Malanath's ruthlessness knows no bounds. There is no length to which he will not go to see his plans proceed, no cost too great. Because of his immortal nature, he does not make plans as most do, and his designs are typically very far-reaching efforts. He coldly calculates the effects and consequences of every decision he makes, and always has his mind set on the end goal.
Negative Personality Traits: Malanath is very slow to make friends or offer trust, as he sees them as things that could potentially be used against him. He also looks down on the 'lesser' races, which is pretty much anything that isn't a Highborne elf. Displays extreme arrogance, due to his magical prowess and immortality.
History Before The Grim: Malanath was among the first of the Elves to practice arcane magic, back in the times of the ancients. He spoke out against the summoning of Sargeras at the onset of the War of the Ancients, only because he felt it would be better to contain and bind such a force to the elven race, not to bend knee to it. Because of his objections, he found himself fighting alongside the heroes of the age... Malfurion, Tyrande, Jared Shadowsong, the like.
Following the War of the Ancients, Malanath was among those Highborne that wanted to re-create the Well of Eternity, and was forced into exile along with the rest of his kind. Malanath felt that the Highborne should have fought against the exile, but his voice was again ignored. Malanath assisted with the founding of Quel'thalas, and the creation of the Sunwell. He fought against the Amani trolls, and was again disgusted by the weakness of his race when they reached out to the dwarves and humans for support. His magical studies constantly pushed the boundaries of morality, fascinated as he was with demonic lore since the War of the Ancients.
Malanath also participated in the founding of Dalaran, where he relocated, knowing that his magical studies would not be tolerated in Quel'thalas. He was one of the supporters of the creation of the Order of Tirisfal, even putting his name forward as a potential Guardian. His studies into demonic magic were discovered centuries later by the Guardian of Tirisfal, Magna Scavell, and he was banished from Dalaran.
After his exile, he was shunned by his own people as well, and he wandered the land, eventually growing weak from the absence of magic... so he turned to a new source. Demonic magic. Through many failed experiments, Malanath discovered the secret of creating a lich, and willingly transformed himself into an undead creature.
Since that time, Malanath has renewed his efforts into the preservation and empowerment of the Elven race, through whatever means and schemes he deems necessary, biding his time until he could return to Quel'thalas.
History In The Grim: Since joining the Grim, Malanath has directed his power first and foremost at the Alliance. He fought alongside the warrior Khorvis Bloodstar, despite the orc's obvious disdain for his spellcraft. Malanath unleashed millennia of arcane knowledge at the champions of the alliance, while offering his insights and tactical advice to the new leader of the Grim's war efforts, Addikus Grace. The canny rogue saw the value of Malanath's words and power, and elevated him to the rank of Dreadweaver, to better assist in the ongoing conflict.
