History Before The Grim: Tyner Valen grew up on a turnip and radish farm just west of Tranquillen in what is now called the Ghostlands. As a result of his mother dying at a young age, he was raised by his father and his uncle. As a child he spent most of his days catching frogs in the local creek, swimming daily, and chasing girls. He made every attempt to shirk his family's farming and fishing duties as much as possible.

Once he came of age Tyner decided to join a volunteer army in hopes of impressing his first serious girlfriend. His family saw his decision as foolish and was disappointed with him stating, "You will be a poor soldier." Tyner lashed out, running away from the farm to the streets of Silvermoon City.

After his first night away from his family, he was snatched from the bed of his lover by the minions of Arthas that had set up the volunteer army as a way to recruit able bodied members to become the first Death Knight prototypes. Tyner was less then a perfect example of what a Death Knight should be, never fully losing his humanity and in result preforming poorly in his training. He usually followed orders out of fear of final death then an unwavering obedience to Arthas. Witnessing the atrocities of the Scourge left his mind battered and unhealthy, bringing him to a state of constant paranoia.

After training as the first generation of Death Knights, he marched upon his homeland, slaying his family out of spite for what they called him years ago. He then assisted in the attack of Silvermoon only to lay dead yet again at the grievous wound delt to him by Sylvanas Windrunner. After the battle a Scourge necromancer revived the fallen Tyner, impressed in what was whitnessed of his channeled anger during battle in the newly formed Dead Scar.

Once deployed back on the Ebon Hold, Tyner began to suffer from the guilt of slaying his family, and became bitter to the Scourge that had given him his new strength through death. He secretly plotted his excape. One day, Tyner had been ordered to kill a loved one of his in his training only to see that the one he was to kill was the lover he had been stripped from the night he was taken in Silvermoon. He freed the captive and escaped into the Plaguelands with her only to be attacked by the relentless Scourge. She fell and died in the resulting battle, Tyner being the only survivor. His true loves earring as his only lasting memento.

Tyner hid in the Eastern Kingdoms from both Alliance, Horde and his betrayed Scourge. Eventually in his travels he began to hear stories about how some of his Ebon Knight brothers were now presenting themselves to the Horde leader Thrall. He quickly cut his hair short, and changed his name to Valentyne, fearful his other brothers in Arthas would find him a coward for his flight from the Ebon Hold.

Valentyne wandered the Undercity sewers only to find the uncle he killed, now a forsaken, in a state of dementia. He gathered him together, nursed him back to partial sanity, and created an order focused only on protecting Sylvanas, and following her every order without question.

He has since married to Rheyvan Norre' Antem, who cared little for his dead state and was an outcast herself due to having a Night Elf mother. During a difference of opinion his wife left him. Immediately, Valentyne ordered his troops to attack her mothers home town, Astranaar. Rheyvan's mother was killed in the battle. As a result of his actions, Valentyne was asked to step down due to lack of confidence by his subordinates. Weeks later, he was reinstated. Rheyvan was left in a state of dementia that Valentyne was helping her recuperate from but after an argument about her volunteer work hours at an orphanage Rheyvan mysteriously vanished.

Valentyne then refocused his efforts to his order, but was soon distracted by the realization that he had a daughter from his sweetheart so long ago. He now faces the complications of balancing cold, heartless killing of Alliance for his simple family's safety while taking care of his daughter and her mother in his callous and cold state.
