Zulric

Unread post by Zulric »

Full Name: Zulric
Titles or Nicknames: Witch Doctor, Envoy
Age: Mid 30's
Race: Zandalari Troll
Gender: Male
Hair: Blue, long and flowing (and visibly receding)
Eyes: Cyan, faint glow
Height: 8'3" (average)
Body Type: Toned, slightly below peak performance.
Notable Physical Features: While his form is mostly concealed by thick robes, the witch doctor has a number of strange alchemical mutations about him -- some more visible than others. Durable tiger-like claws are mutated to grow on his feet, with smaller (and less intrusive) versions on his fingertips that still allow for the usage of gloves. Notably, he also bears runic sigils of power etched into his arms as with many Zandalari.

Place of residence: Dazar'alor, the Grim's guild hall
Place of Birth: Outskirts of Zuldazar
Known Relatives: Kelavi (mother, alive), Zal'vis (father, N/A), Virun (paternal grandfather, deceased)

Religion/Philosophy: Having descended from a long line of Bwonsamdi worshippers, Zulric was among the first in his bloodline to ever convert to another loa later in life -- a decision his family wasn't terribly fond of. Despite now following the ideologies and faith of Kimbul, he still bears the heavy mark and extensive teachings of the Loa of Death. While not quite as devout or connected to the loa as a priest would be, Zulric maintains a deal of reverence that is fitting for a Zandalari troll.

Zulric has a number of strong opinions regarding the concepts of science and trust.

"It is important to maintain a strong air of warmth and trustworthiness...makes you an unlikely suspect when de time comes to spend that trust."

"There is a saying in Zandalar; 'just because you can, doesn't mean you should.' I find it to be quite unscientific, best to disregard it."

Occupation: Witch Doctor, Envoy, Martial Artist (hobbyist)
Guild Rank: Warbringer
Known Associates: Scholars within Zuldazar, the Raptari, dockyard gangs, and numerous consultants within Orgrimmar.
Known Nemesis: Blood trolls, the Alliance

Special Skills: Working with spirits, alchemical transmutation, brewing, magical tracking and identification, and networking.
Positive Personality Traits: Diplomatic, polite, knowledgable, charismatic, adapts personality depending on circumstances, strives for enlightenment.
Negative Personality Traits: Arrogant, condescending, deceptive, manipulative, often lets problems fester and omits vital information and solutions in the interest of "seeing what happens", prone to dangerous and potentially amoral research.

History Before The Grim: Born to a respected shaman and a merchant, Zulric enjoyed a comfortable early life on the outskirts of Zuldazar where he was prepared for the selection of his caste from an early age. The worship of Bwonsamdi was nowhere near as prevalent as it was in modern times, so he underwent training from his grandfather -- a witch doctor -- in relative seclusion. When it became apparent that his connection to the loa would not be sufficient enough for him to be granted priesthood, he was instead extensively trained in the art of working with the spirits as a medium so that he could one day take it on as a profession. During this period his father, Zal'vis, spent a considerable amount of time at sea, utilizing his abilities as a shaman to quell the storms and assist in the defense of the ships. Zal'vis's time at sea would later have...unfortunate aftereffects, as was the case with most of his crew -- the information regarding their case is scarce, though it led to Zal'vis's eventual and permanent disappearance.

As time went on he took more and more trips to the city, often venturing there to sell brews and provide seances for coin. He continued to expand his skillset under his grandfather's tutelage, though during his time in the city he began to find more interest in the idea of brawling. Though such notions were hastily dismissed, his interest in melee combat never truly dwindled over the years. During his early forays into the field of alchemical transmutation, his research saw a considerably amount of pushback from a certain sect of Raptari regarding the morality of his work. This, among other circumstances, pushed Zulric to find quieter means of conducting his experiments. For all the trouble he'd endured in his research, his efforts still managed to earn him many acquaintances and consultants -- even from those who had initially opposed him.

After the Shattering and the blood trolls' subsequent attacks on the Blood Gate, Zulric was selected to join a Rastari military outfit in which he'd assist in tracking and countering the blood troll's magic, as well as assisting them as combatant. They found great success in their incursions into Nazmir, and over the months he grew quite close to his comrades, with one in particular. Their fortune within the cursed swamp was not to last however, as on one fateful day nearly the entire company was utterly decimated by a blood troll ambush. Devastated by the development, Zulric and the other remaining member of their force managed to crawl their way out of Nazmir and reach Zuldazar safely, yet scarred. Unable to bear the horrors of what they had seen within Nazmir, the other remaining member offed himself while Zulric resolved to embark on a pilgrimage to Vol'dun to seek out the loa.

The witch doctor spent a few years in the scorching desert, and though his journey was long he'd managed to discovered the whereabouts of the Prey's Doom, Kimbul. Misguided and seeking redemption, Zulric beseeched Kimbul that he could become a monk at his temple and spend the remainder of his days in service of the great tiger loa. Kimbul refused his request, stating that he would not accept any additional followers until the souls of his old ones were freed -- and even then, the witch doctor's path laid elsewhere. Zulric accepted the response, choosing instead (after careful deliberation) to convert to the teachings of Kimbul, taking him on as his patron loa.

Following his years in Vol'dun, he returned to Zuldazar with a renewed passion and vigor, though he had been met with the news that his grandfather had passed in his absence. Despite this, he continued his research up until the events of the Blood War, when outsiders were allowed past the docks of Dazar'alor for the very first time. During this period, Zulric was taken on by a pandaren monk and trained in ancient pandaren fighting styles, allowing him to combine pandaren techniques with his own self-taught swordsmanship and Zandalari brawling. This would come in handy during the events of the Battle of Dazar'alor, which was when he first came into contact with The Grim.

History In The Grim: As the negotiations between the Horde and the Zandalari Empire had been well underway, Queen Talanji elected to have a number of diplomats and ambassadors -- both trained and volunteered -- sent out to strengthen the bonds between the two nations and ensure that the Horde would receive a positive impression of the Zandalari. Those who tested well, however, were given the additional tasks of gathering intel and keeping a close eye on the inner workings of the Horde. They were also tasked with researching some of the Horde's more esoteric organizations, examining their behavior and becoming a fully-fledged member for the sake of expanding the Empire's knowledge...and ensuring they wouldn't become a threat. Depending on the organization it could be a lifetime's work, and it was one Zulric was certainly prepared for -- plus it had the added benefit of allowing him to kill Alliance and conduct his experiments without the oppressive regulations of a 16,000 year old empire.

Though he had only been a part of the Grim (and the Horde) for a short while, Zulric had acclimated quickly to the new environment and had made plenty of new companions. Eager to put his skillset and talents to use, the witch doctor endeavors to prove himself to the Grim. Though some among their ranks remain (rightfully) suspicious of his intentions, he only continues his efforts to prove himself worthy of the Grim's favor and looks forward to a extremely long and mutually beneficial union.

Mostly beneficial for himself, of course.
