I'm looking at picking up a tablet in the next few months or so and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for which are the best/not crap.

I'm really fond of the Galaxy series. I have a Galaxy S2 and it does everything that I want it to except play high end mobile games (Dungeon Defenders) smoothly. An S3 would resolve that issue.
I'm not sure if you're looking for Wifi or Cellular connection but I personally like the Wifi because I can travel ANYWHERE and it works without issue. When I was in Amsterdam my tablet did everything there that it could do here. If you don't travel much then the cellular is definitely a bit more convenient.
EDIT: There is one major drawback to the Galaxy tabs: You have to charge using a proprietary charger sold by Samsung. I don't know if all tablets are this way but it is displeasing.

I highly recommend the Nexus 7. I own one and it is wonderful.
