Isn't this just a British/American English difference? I never use 'offense' but see it written everywhere there are Americans.

I thought it was the same word with a different meaning. Turns out they're different words that sound identical. Grammatical details.

Offense is like football (offense and defense) or to be rude.
The team needed a better offense.
That asshole was offensive.

Offence is when you're crossing social boundaries or breaking laws.
That burp was an offence of my senses.
Your speeding ticket is a class 1 offence.

But over here we have 'Defence' with a 'c', only; used in all contexts. Like the Australian Defence Force.
