Computer Advice

Unread post by Aureilya »

My desktop computer is pretty old, well beyond its warranty, and it's been acting up lately- so I wasn't surprised when it decided to kick the bucket tonight. I was hoping it would be able to limp along until November when I might be able to find some good holiday deals, but that wasn't meant to be.

I have a decent laptop as backup for the time being, but I really want to replace the Desktop. Naturally, I want something good for running WoW. Money is most definitely an issue, and since I don't know a damn thing about computers nor do I have anyone else who really does- I would prefer to get something from a store or order from somewhere well known like Bestbuy or CompUSA.. that way I can get a warranty and tech support and all that business.

Any recommendations? (PC, not Mac). Mostly what I use my computer for (beyond web browsing) is WoW, streaming tons of Netflix, itunes downloads, etc. I'm seeing stuff online starting around $379 to upwards of $900, and I'd need to stay in the lower range.. $500 or under would be ideal. Anyone know if this is possible? I'm not even sure where to begin looking.

There are quite a few posts here that Ashenfury and I made.

Here is a starter for you. Just a pre-built from NewEgg.

I'd recommend you sniff around and throw some links up, and from there people will be able to help you a bit more than the general distress call you're sending out. A system around $500 bucks is simple enough to get for WoW, movie streaming, and general usage... though at that price that is what you're going to get... WoW and basic internet usage.

Do you have a Newegg, Abric? I'm not familiar with the brand at all, other than hearing the name before. That was recommended to me over on TNG also, though.. are they generally good to go for gaming straight out of the box, or would I need to add extra graphics/memory like I did on my current desktop? (A Compaq Presario.)

New Egg is a store, like CompUSA. Not a brand.

I built both Anaie's computer and my own through kits I got on New Egg. Mine died recently, but it was about 4 years old. Anaie's is still running strong.

Edit: New Egg is an online store.*

Wow...thank you for linking that computer Abric, I am saving that link for myself...I need a new computer desperately, and I could probably afford that one at a later date.

MMO does a monthly thing so a new one will be due out in the next week or so. Ars is probably due for their spring refresh.

Those too!

Customization is the king of the hill at the moment - while you do get customer service and someone else doing the hard work for you when going with a computer company; you save money with building your own rig. While you may not have experience putting all the pieces together - I'd find it surprising if you don't know someone you'd let into your house that can do it.

You just have to weigh in what is more valuable to you ... your money or your time. If time is more valuable, you can have a company build it for you. If money is more valuable, then its best to do it yourself... or throw a smile and a bit of leg and make some dude do it. FREE LABO(U)R!

LOL I'd rather have it be quick easy and painless, aka plug and play. I've had good luck with computers that are prebuilt...so I think I'd better stick to what I know...the only thing that sucks about the prebuilt is having to uninstall all the "bloatware" but I'm skilled at that.

Newegg and Tiger Direct (http://www.tigerdirect.com) are my 2 main sources for computer equipment. I have nothing but good things to say about their customer service. The few things that I had to return were processed quickly and painlessly.

My goto place for computer and electronic accessories like cables, switches, adapters, and other miscellaneous stuff is Monoprice (http://www.monoprice.com). You will be amazed at how much retail stores mark up things like cables. The quality of their stuff is pretty good and I've been happy with their customer service.
