Temperature Sensors

Okay so here are a couple of questions in regards to a CPU temperature sensor.

This is what the manufacturer wants me to do:


When I tape the sensor as pictured above the temperatures are way off. So now I have 2 problems: Where exactly do you put it and what do I use to stick it on? I went to several electronic shops in town and they all have gels and glues but no tapes.

Here is your average CPU socket on a motherboard. I see a lot of postings from Google searches that recommend putting it under the pins. Is there any chance one of you could highlight in this picture what are is considered 'under the pins'.


I'm having a similar problem with my VGA but I've yet to give it much attention since the temperatures have been controllable.

Also do you guys know of any way to tell what RPM a fan is capable of and what voltage it is?

I know that the RPM and voltage of fans is handled by either the motherboard (if the direct connections say so) or through a fan controller (i.e. additional hardware). With my motherboard, I can track my CPU fan and two additional fans through BIOS, and then indirectly through other fan control software. Of course, those fans connect directly to the motherboard, while my other two fans which connect through the power supply do not have anything.

... which I think you already knew. So, I'm just typing this for my own sake. Take that, SCIENCE!

I don't think your sensor is small enough to fit under the pins like you're talking about.

That first picture was all I needed Dem. I see! Yeah I think there's plenty of room for it to fit but as we discussed I'm not fucking with those pressure screws again... especially alone :)

So that solves my CPU conundrum. Now on to the VGA portion. I'll probably have questions tomorrow. Yay for learning!

For the GPU's just put the sensor on the water block and use a good amount of thermal paste to get good heat conduction.

The sensor will read about 5c below the GPU temp. GPU-Z is your friend though - it'll tell you everything from all the sensors on the gpu and they'll be at least 3 and probably more. (It will also tell you if you suck at putting the water block on the GPU properly, they are fussy bastards to get perfect)

If you don't know the answer to this you've got shitty OEM fans. Order some decent ones where you know the specs.

You can determine the voltage by how the fan is receiving power. Molex, fan header, etc.

He isn't a fan of water-cooling yet, Grainger. I'm working on it, though. ;)

Not a fan of water cooling? Obviously you've missed previous posts in which I drool over the Exos. I'm a huge fan, I'm just not an adopter yet.

Jesus tapdancing Christ, that thermocouple photo is what the manufacturer recommends? Are they fucking retarded? A 2nd year chemical engineer would go apeshit over such a pisspoor design.

I'm guessing it's 2-wire, so it's a standard thermistor. What I'd do is grab a decent drillpress, and drill myself a little thermowell. In said thermowell, I'd put in a little thermally conductive material, shove in the thermistor, then Kapton tape the sucker in there.

There. Accurate temperature reading of the temperature at that point in the block. For measuring the temperature of the actual core...well, there's a reason why us engineers add 10%-20% safety factors into designs...

I'm returning the damn thing. All of my temperatures are reading a couple C off from my ambient temperature even under extreme load. Looks like I'll be going back to GPU-Z and PC-Probe for temperature monitoring.

It's extremely frustrating to buy something that you like that just doesn't function correctly. I tried putting the probes on the card exhaust and they still didn't read much different. Finally I replaced the probe with 2 replacements that come with the unit and of course they read the same things. It's just a cheap turd is all. It getting a review and a reward on my blog. Another 'Turd in a Box'.

I guess I'm going to grab a refund and get a wireless camera for my front door and another fan for push-pull on my CPU heat sink.
