The gum people paid him to do it. I think he was bumming around for the first 6 month-1 year.

Stride actually puts inside their packaging sometimes messages that invite you to send them crazy and interesting ideas and if they like it, they will pay for it as long as you mention Stride at the end being the sponsor.

There were actual news articles out that he "admitted it was all a hoax".  Human stupidity is at an all-time high.  Reporters are morons.
