Abric Builds a Computer
Re: Abric Builds a Computer
You could always have em drop a new line, punch a hole through your wall, slap a wall plate on it and tell your landlord that it's been there the whole time. At least, that's how I roll.
Re: Abric Builds a Computer
Depends on your home install. For my home, it's straight copper with no GFCI between me and the computer (all the GFCI protection is local and not in the breaker box). Hence there's not much noise on the line. So, it's a YMMV.
I know in our house, the wireless going from the basement to the upper floor, literally diagonally from the two points, well sucks.
Granted, I'd love to hardwire everything since one bit of my hardware goes apeshit whenever the Internets is working.

My old man is a huge Am Radio guy himself. He has a 100+ ft antenna for every band (meter?) for as long as I can remember. Every time we moved it was a big ordeal to re pour enough cement for the damn thing. Anyways you can imagine back in those days when dial up was prevalent. Every electronic in the house becomes unusable. I remember when he really cranked it up that not only could I not turn on any speakers, play the internet, use a land line, or watch TV but even my speakers that were TURNED OFF would jam some noise out of them... there was no escaping the old man's voice.
Re: Abric Builds a Computer
A little over week, three returns and resends, and I do believe the new computer is up and running. Just waiting on some cable to connect it directly to the router (right now it's connecting to the Mac, which is connected wirelessly to the router) to be finished with... well... most things.
Still need to get an adapter for my front USB 3.0 connection, though. Right now the case just has a USB 3.0 cord from the front running to the back for me to connect the front via the back, when I can just connect it directly to the motherboard. I'm also debating if I'm going to return my monitors for a newer version (i.e. 40$ more) that has HDMI connections, but laziness and the desire to have what I have now may win out.
Now, to begin the massive updates to Windows and installation of all software needed to survive. Bam!

HDMI or Display Port are the way to go.

Re: Abric Builds a Computer
Gotta watch out with hdmi connections to monitors. My Dell for example doesn't feel it's necessary to make use of it's full resolution capabilities via hdmi.
Also if you decide to run your hdmi connection through a a/v reciever to your computer, make sure said a/v unit is capable of passing through a pure signal instead of scaling it to 1080p. I can't tell you how many people that's screwed over.

Re: Abric Builds a Computer
I don't get why lots of pc people are scoffing at 1080p. You realize basically every tv show, movie, and or the vast majority of video games are either being made for 720 or 1080 at this point right? Upscaling a game that was designed for 1080p is only going to have so much effect.
Re: Abric Builds a Computer
For a given definition of HDMI. Even 1.3 and 1.4 only have so much bandwidth. They will push 2560x1600x60 fps (1.0->1.2 won't even do that) but you can't get much more fps out of the spec, its just too much data for it.Greebo wrote:HDMI or Display Port are the way to go.
Display Port >>> Dual-Link DVI >>> HDMI

Know your audience. The odds of anyone buying a screen with a rez higher than 19x12 and not knowing the details is unlikely. However I gotta agree with DP ranked #1.

Re: Abric Builds a Computer
Alright, computer is up and running and after making sure it doesn't explode... the case is now closed (knock on wood).
Only thing I have to trouble shoot is something with the BIOS start-up. It seems it takes the computer two times to actually load up. The first time my little BIOS light recognizes good RAM, memory, and a boot device (on the motherboard), but it shuts down for a second regardless. It then boots back up, and everything is solid.
I am also getting a message (doesn't look like an error) saying I don't have a hard drive installed. I obviously do, but I get the BIOS load screen twice because of it. I'll have to look at what it says exactly, but besides that everything seems to be solid.
Oh hello Shogun 2: Total War. I would indeed like to kill feudal Japanese with my Katana sword.

Re: Abric Builds a Computer
Check your boot order in your Bios to see if you have the BIOs checking for 2 hard drives or what you are booting from.
Re: Abric Builds a Computer
I'm solid there. My first boot priority is my SSD with Windows, with secondary being my BRD (heh). Though, the way this BIOS is (its an ASUS interactive), the boot priority for HDD is broken into primary and secondary, as I have a SSD (primary) and HDD (secondary).
I wonder if it is how I plugged them in. For my SATA cable, I made sure the SSD was set on the first plug of the power cable and the first jack for SATA. Or did I? Hrm, was under the impression they didn't do that anymore, but I'll have to check!

Woo cheers on a new computer. Does this mean I won't hear any more whining about your mac?
Also email me back dammit.

To email you back would mean I received an email in return! Last one I have is the one I sent. And no, you'll still hear me complain about the Mac.Thalevia wrote:Woo cheers on a new computer. Does this mean I won't hear any more whining about your mac?

Gmail fails then. I sent you a huge one on the first or second of september via my gmail account. Cause my old Yahoo account is evil and only partially works now.Abric wrote:To email you back would mean I received an email in return! Last one I have is the one I sent. And quit bitching about the mac, it knows you hate it and will continue to do bad things to you and your stuff.
