I am at work at the library, on a Monday night, and you...

I'm one of those people that hates (and loves) going to Barnes and Noble o other book stores, because I know my pocketbook will suffer because of it. I've got to get a second bookcase because the one I have right now is full, and I don't have space for...a good thirty other books...

Anaie had to ween me off of going to Borders. I had been working for the company for about 6 years, then happened to move and try finding a new position at one of our two local stores during one of the tightest payroll crunches ever (meaning definitely no money for someone who would be getting more than minimum wage!). We ended up going way too often and walking out every time with books in our arms. I'm amazed that the last two times we went, I walked out with only a drink the first time and a father's day card the second.Inzema wrote: I'm one of those people that hates (and loves) going to Barnes and Noble o other book stores, because I know my pocketbook will suffer because of it. I still miss Tuesdays and seeing all the new releases.

I used to read religiously. Now all that I read are Warhammer 40,000 books. Ultramarine and Space Wolf omnibuses are my favorites so far. FOR THE EMPEROR!

Here is some tech support for you...Kazthul wrote: I've tried to utilize books, but I have qualms with their graphic interface. Either their resolution is too high or the UI is just plain dreadful. As a former UI customization junkie, I can't do default UI books. Sorry.

Ah reading. Alas, that I'm one of those people who mostly reads crap these days. To my credit, I did read Moby Dick when I was 14...for fun.
Though I don't think I've read anything that wasn't sci-fi or fantasy in a few years.

Hey, A), there's nothing inherently bad about sci-fi and fantasy, so don't think that, and B), I can probably point you to some sci-fi and fantasy that could be considered "literary" if you still feel bad about the stuff you're reading.
For my part, about two out of every three books I read nowadays are young adult books, but that's mostly because it's my job. I do tend to finish two or three books a week though because the YA novels tend to be easier to get through.

Heh, I either read my old collection of Battletech novels nowadays, or stuff about ancient Chinese philosophy and ethnobotany. Somewhat polar differences.
Re: I am at work at the library, on a Monday night, and you...
Leyujin wins for reading old Battletech novels. Seriously, I just reread the Warrior trilogy like, 2 months ago. As for Sci-fi, Yichi, that's true, and certainly I don't feel bad for the time I've sunk into reading (re-reading) Dune. Or Lord of the Rings. Or the Silmarillian. Or really anything by Tolkien. Though I'm not sure my recent habit of re-reading 9 Honor Harrington books in preparation for reading the 10th is particularly good. Check that I should really read Shadow of Saganami and Sword from the Shadows while I'm at it. So...9 reruns and 3 new ones...

Ah, sci-fi books. I love going to the library and snagging the collection of Young Jedi Knights books, or Tales from the Bounty Hunters, or Tales from the Cantina. They never have WoW books, though...

If you like the Honorverse (although I think you're just in it for Nimitz), check out the Lost Fleet books by Jack Campbell.Faeriel wrote: Though I'm not sure my recent habit of re-reading 9 Honor Harrington books in preparation for reading the 10th is particularly good.

He is, it's true.Grainger wrote: If you like the Honorverse (although I think you're just in it for Nimitz), check out the Lost Fleet books by Jack Campbell.
I've never really gotten into sci-fi or fantasy books. Mostly I entertain myself with cheesy suspense/thriller/mystery/horror books.

Okay, so that's a good start...but you really need to get some Zahn in your life.Ryanica wrote: Ah, sci-fi books. I love going to the library and snagging the collection of Young Jedi Knights books, or Tales from the Bounty Hunters, or Tales from the Cantina. They never have WoW books, though...

That's a good one. Though after years of reading Star Wars fiction, I've sort of narrowed by "must read" list down to:Ryanica wrote: Let's not forget http://www.amazon.com/Shadows-Empire-St ... 199&sr=1-1 too!
The Thrawn Trilogy (Timothy Zahn)
The X-wing Series (Michael Stackpole and Aaron Allston)
- Yes, Allston's weren't as good as Stackpole's but Wraith Squadron is so freakin' funny! Yub, yub commander!
I, Jedi (Michael Stackpole)
- Seriously, this is a fantastic book. Read this.
The Hand of Thrawn Duology
I'm somewhat "meh" on most of the rest of it.
Things I am not "meh" on, however:
Avoid anything with "The New Jedi Order" printed anywhere on the cover. Seriously, it's just lame. And fuck R.A. Salvatore. Fuck him forever.
The Crystal Star is really terrible.
The Black Fleet Crisis kinda sucks too.
Unless you're a fawning, Boba Fett fan-boy, the Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy is just awful. Those were the first books I ever actually gave away because I knew I would never read them again!
On a different tack, the recent Legacy of the Force series was actually pretty decent!

Re: I am at work at the library, on a Monday night, and you...
Leave RA Salvatore alone. Leave him alone!
Actually his old Drizzt novels weren't too bad. Started off a plethora of Dark Elf wannabes in RPG/Online gaming. "Oh I come from an evil race and am good! Oh woe is me blah blah blah"
Star Wars novels are like Twilight novels. Only fanbois like that tripe.
