Something I found while stewing on Mass Effect 3.
Link. It's a Penny Arcade creation, so expect unnecessarily used "dictionary words" and a feeling of self importance.
The man's voice also makes me want to punch pregnant women. I'm going to have to persuade Fae to find him in Seattle and beat him up. Or Eva... Eva would probably do better at the beating.
Western RPG vs JRPG
Re: Western RPG vs JRPG
"dictionary" words like genre, and tangent! (granted im only halfway through, but I will *pat, pat* Abric on the head anyways))

If the people raise a great howl against my barbarity and cruelty, I will answer that war is war, and not popularity seeking.
Re: Western RPG vs JRPG
If there is one thing I can sniff out in a crowd - it's bullshit. The man has a bullshit vocabulary. I worked with dozens of those sort of people for almost a decade of my life.
Re: Western RPG vs JRPG
Never use a long word when a diminutive one would suffice.
Grisbault, Twice-Made.
The p, s, l, and t are silent, the screams are not.

I do love the irony there....Greebo wrote:Never use a long word when a diminutive one would suffice.

I'm one of those people like him. Smug and verbose, I mean.
I think I decided a while ago that I enjoy the self satisfaction or pleasing expression more than I crave the approval of others. Altogether it's quite a selfish way of communicating; even when I am speaking with someone else, the manner in which I do so is fundamentally tailored not to aiding the communication, but my own aesthetic preferences.
Though, I will say, people like my written word more than my spoken word. Notably so. So maybe the problem is in tone, more so than form.
As for the videos, I liked them. I thought they were informative and rather to the point. At heart I do prefer JRPGs, and miss the days when they were good. Imagine if they released something of Chrono-trigger quality with current graphics and gameplay!

Re: Western RPG vs JRPG
This guy is an idiot. The minute he started saying things like "JRPG's don't let you become the character it is about that characters narative.." I had to stop listening. The "silent" protagonist of RPG's originated in Japan. FF 1 you created the party, every dragon warrior your protagonist is silent for the purpose of letting you decide how you feel about what is happening. His example of how JRPG's are copying western in this case Persona 4 makes him look even stupider. Persona (and or Shin Megami Tensei which is the overall game series Persona belongs to) have always had silent protagonists that in many cases even let you control how they leveled up, their stats, etc, and these games have been around since the 80's.
It only got more laughable when he mentioned successful JRPG's and threw up Dark Souls and such. I love the game but seriously, FF13 easily sold more copies. Hell it sold more copies than every game he visually showed as a successful JRPG combined more than likely.
The only crap that came out of his mouth over that 30 minutes that was correct was this in short... JRPG's are not doing as well because they stopped innovating and are not trying to move forward with new gameplay. If your whole concept will be on average to pooty gameplay then your story better be good. The JRPG stories of late aren't all that good. FF seems magically immune to all this though.
The real reason for the distinction in name and current success though is even simpler. Japan never stopped making games for the japanese. They don't have a world market perspective and it is killing them. Some companies like Atlus and From Software are trying to be a little more out there though hopefully more japanese rpg developers will buy a clue and follow suit. I have been playing the Last Story on Wii and it is definitely a step in the right direction. It's combat even includes crazy ideas like enemy facing, blocking, strategic planning, pulling enemies, kill the healer first, interrupting spells etc etc.
Anyway rant over sum up. The dude is trying to sound smarter than he is (stunning surprise) and failing badly.

Re: Western RPG vs JRPG
Unlike Viktor I've found Final Fantasy to be peddling soggy shit sandwiches since FF 9. I remember playing 10 with the playboy bunny chick and growing bored after playing for most of the day. That ended the series for me and those I've spoken to have felt the same.
RPGs lately have been sucking in story background/narrative. I haven't played a good RPG since Lost Odyssey for the xbox. I mostly use my xbox 360 now for FPS and netflix. PS3, I am sure, has some decent RPGs but none so far have stood out to me from my friends who own the system.

You mistake my post my good man. I said FF13 out sold them, I didn't say I bought it or that I thought it was worth a crap. I haven't played a FF since 10. Also when I said magically immune I meant that in the sense of "it sold well even though the game was crap and it makes all the same mistakes other average JRPG's do."Krinathalasa wrote:Unlike Viktor I've found Final Fantasy to be peddling soggy shit sandwiches since FF 9.
