Trial of Combat

The Grim do not resolve issues with words, but with action. When the Warchief Thrall called to the members of the Horde to defend against the threats to its existence, The Grim were among the first to answer that call. In every campaign and every conflict since then, The Grim have been in the vanguard of the fight. From the beginning, we knew there was only one way to succeed in our battles – Peace Through Annihilation.

The Inquisitor may assign the Supplicant a specific task for this Trial, or the Supplicant may choose their battle. In any case, the Trial and following report must be completed within 30 days of joining The Grim.

In the Trial of Combat, a Supplicant must find success in a fight against an enemy or enemies of equal or greater standing to their current level of experience. They must participate in combat alongside another Grim officer, and then submit a report about the experience. The Inquisitors may then contact the officer who was present, for confirmation that the Supplicant's combat performance was satisfactory.

If found worthy, a Supplicant will begin their next Trial. If found unworthy, the Supplicant will be given a single chance to redeem themselves or be removed from The Grim.

OOC: The Grim does not reward mediocre or sloppy gaming and this Trial is meant to test the player’s competency in game play. This Trial can be completed through either PvE or PvP content, so long as it is the same level or tier of difficulty as the current level of the character. You can make a post in The Gallow's End Tavern forum, describing the combat, and their impressions of the Grims they fought alongside.

Trial of Resolve

The Necromancer, Maledictus, brought the Mandate to The Grim, but it is those who followed after him who made it more than just words – they gave it life. Those who follow the Mandate come from different backgrounds and are different people, but through it they become something more. More than the individual, they become the idea of the Mandate and, because of it, The Grim continue to thrive where others have fallen.

In the Trial of Resolve, a Supplicant will pull individuals from that idea and hear their words so they may understand the actions being taken because of them. From them, learn who they are, how they serve The Grim, and what it means to be Grim. Ask them anything you like, and be prepared for them to want to learn about you as well.

Alternately, you may speak to various Grims and search the guild hall, to learn about a fallen or departed Grim, and provide a report on them. The same questions should still be answered--who were they, how did they serve The Grim, what did being Grim mean to them?

Your Inquisitor may assign you three specific Grims to interview. If not, you may select three Grims of your own choosing--one Adherent or Reaper, one Harbinger, and one officer.

After your interviews, write a report on what you have learned from them, and include what it means to you to be Grim. You will have thirty days to complete this Trial from the day it is assigned.

OOC: The Grim is a long standing community of gamers, both past and present. While we do not dwell on the past, we do respect it and those who made all this possible. This trial is giving the opportunity of the player and their character to experience that history through the words of those who made it, as well as associate with people they may not normally associate with through gameplay. Most of this Trial is going to be on the members you speak to, but we are looking more to your view point of what they are saying. In regards to the story of fallen Grim, this will take some creativity on your part. Stories of former members will be allowed, but must be approved by the High Inquisitor or Guild Master before they are used – so communicate with the leadership if you want to use any source material from the website. If you are having difficulty, do not be afraid to ask for help.

Trial of Sacrifice or Trial of Service

Your Inquisitor may assign you a specific task for your third Trial. If not, you may select either a Trial of Sacrifice or a Trial of Service. Discuss your decision with your Inquisitor before starting it to make sure it will be accepted.

Trial of Sacrifice
War is sacrifice – none know this more than The Grim. We do what others are unwilling to do, either because of personal morals, their culture, or their own limits. There are no innocents in battle and no price too high for victory. To stand among The Grim, a Supplicant must understand that their life before the Mandate cannot constrain them to what they must do, for there is no room for doubts within the moment.

In the Trial of Sacrifice, a Supplicant must show their willingness to let go of who they once were and to embrace the Mandate as who they are now. What the Supplicant will sacrifice will be up to them – but it is within the eyes of the Mandate if it is truly a sacrifice worth giving. You are Grim or you are nothing.

If the sacrifice is found worthy, the Supplicant will be welcomed within the Grim as an Adherent and be recognized as a full member of The Grim and a true follower of the Mandate. If found unworthy, a Supplicant will be given a single chance to redeem themselves or be removed from The Grim.

Trial of Service
The Grim is made up of many people, some leaders and some followers. Such a large group has many needs including training and entertainment.

In your Trial of Service, you will help satisfy one of those needs. The options are limitless, but a few examples are listed below.

Offer a service to all Grims, such as teaching them to fight in arenas and gaining a full set of armor there.
Plan and host an event or tournament for all Grims and also invite other Horde not affected by madness.
If needed, assist another office with a large task.

These are just a few examples. Other ideas are welcome and encouraged. Whatever task is selected, it should be significant, and approved by your Inquisitor before starting it. This is, after all, the final Trial before fully becoming Grim.

OOC: The Trial of Service/Sacrifice is meant to allow the Supplicant player to flex their creative muscle. The in-character words for this Trial are meant to be vague, so you as the player can choose what of value your character has to show The Grim that they are committed to the cause. What we are looking for here is the transition of your character’s backstory or previous WoW experience to the Grim storyline and, while it is up to you to provide the substance and context, it will be the Grim leadership who decides if the character’s sacrifice is something of worth. We are looking for something creative, but within the confines of game mechanics and good taste. It is recommended to speak to the High Inquisitor or Guild Master (in that order) if you are unclear or if you need suggestions, as we want to make this not only a fun and memorable experience, but one without stress or anxiety.

[[ As the form of the Inquisition has changed over time, this document is being unstickied and retired. Refer to The Inquisition topic for current details.

We all owe Syreena a debt of gratitude for her work in formulating the Challenges of the Mandate, and her language has been worked into the new outline. ]]
